Lorenzo Maitani and Associates, Noli Me Tangere

1310-31
Stone relief
West façade, Orvieto Cathedral

Mary Magdalene barely touches Christ's garment while his gesture expresses the words "do not touch me" (noli me tangere in Latin). The trees in the background suggest that they are in a garden and thus explain her mistaking him for a gardener. Her low bow references her cry, Rabboni, when she recognizes him. He carries the long cross that is often seen in images of his emergence from the tomb.
